TUSSIE MUSSIES
"In the circle, the flower is the moment that we live." ~Alex Atala
Tussie Mussies, or nosegays, have a rich history dating back to medieval times. Herbs and flowers, each with their own symbolic meaning, were bound together in a deliberate fashion and intended to impart a message to the receiver. The Victorian Era saw a resurrection of the tradition, and suitors often watched to see how the object of their affection would carry the gift; close to the heart might indicate the sentiments were returned, facing downward was a signal of rejection.

Marnie often incorporates this timeless tradition in her work and utilizes the symbolic visual references to translate, suggest and portend meaning.
